Candidacy and Contraindications

Who is a candidate for Earlens?
Earlens is intended to treat individuals 18 years and older with a mild to severe sensorineural hearing impairment who can benefit from amplification.
Are there any contraindications?
Yes. The patient must not have any known or active medical issues that would preclude having a hearing device. Please refer to the Instructions for Use for the full list of contraindications.
Where can I find the Indications for Use?
Please contact Earlens Customer Care or refer to the product documentation.

Earlens Technology

What are the benefits of a full-spectrum hearing solution?
Research indicates that high frequencies enhance speech clarity and performance in noise, while low frequencies provide temporal cues that improve the perceived quality of speech and music. Earlens is the first hearing solution to deliver a full spectrum of audibility that brings patients closer to normal hearing than any conventional hearing aid can.
Is high-frequency amplification tolerable?
Some patients require a short adjustment period and benefit from the Earlens acclimatization program. Others immediately adapt to the prescribed high-frequency gain without additional adjustments.
How does the Lens stay in place?
The custom Lens is suspended directly adjacent to the Tympanic Membrane (TM) in the sulcus area, with a small 3 mm umbo platform resting on the TM. Natural anatomy and a daily mineral-oil regimen create a light surface tension similar to the way a contact lens is retained on the eye.
How long does the Lens stay in place?
The Lens is designed to stay in place over extended periods. Evaluation is recommended within the first 3 months, again at 6 months, then annually or as prescribed.
Can patients swim, shower, etc. with the Lens in place?
Recreational swimming is fine. Earplugs are recommended for prolonged water immersion. Earlens has not tested pressures beyond 10 feet, so Lens retention during scuba diving cannot be recommended.
Can patients get an MRI with the Lens in place?
No. A physician must remove the Lens before an MRI and replace it once the scan is complete.
How does cerumen impact the Lens?
Cerumen and epithelial debris are expected and must be managed for optimal Lens stability and system performance. Routine otologic management combined with a daily mineral-oil regimen facilitates this.
Is the Ear Tip custom made for the patient?
Yes. Earlens uses the ear impressions taken by the ENT physician to create a custom-molded Ear Tip and Lens for each ear that is fit with Earlens. Power delivery is calibrated at the individual patient level.
Is Earlens Bluetooth compatible?
The Earlens System is Bluetooth compatible with Apple's MFi capability, and users access the Earlens app for adjustments. Please contact Earlens Customer Care for current device-compatibility details.
What is the life expectancy of the rechargeable Processor battery?
The Processor has an internal rechargeable battery designed to last for the duration of the 3-year warranty, or 1,100 cycles.

Fitting the Earlens Solution

Is training required to fit Earlens?
All providers of the Earlens solution — including Ear, Nose, and Throat physicians and audiologists — are required to participate in an approved Earlens training program.
Is anesthesia required?
Neither the impression process nor Lens placement or removal requires anesthesia.
How do we obtain a patient's anatomy for the custom Lens and Ear Tip?
Trained ENT physicians take an impression of the full ear canal and Tympanic Membrane using proprietary impression material.
How long does it take to place or remove the Lens?
Placing or removing a Tympanic Lens is a short procedure. It takes about 15 minutes and is performed in the doctor's office without anesthesia. Most patients report mild or no discomfort.
How long does it take to program Earlens?
Programming Earlens via our NOAH-compatible software is very similar to fitting a traditional hearing aid. Reserve the same appointment duration you would for a standard hearing-aid fitting.
How many appointments are required?
The Earlens solution typically takes 2–3 visits for optimization: an initial consultation and impression, followed by Lens placement and Processor fitting, with regular follow-ups thereafter.

Safety and Efficacy

Is the Lens safe?
Clinical studies show that the Tympanic Lens does not damage the Tympanic Membrane or ear canal. Feasibility and Definitive trials showed no hearing-threshold changes after 120 days (p < 0.0001).
Does the placed Lens dampen or alter a patient's hearing?
Studies demonstrate a slight reduction of sound in some patients due to the loading effect of the Lens (< 5 dB PTA). This reduction is temporary and immediately reversed upon Lens removal or Processor activation.

Pricing, Warranty and Insurance

How much does Earlens cost?
The price of Earlens is set by the Earlens provider.
Does Earlens offer a warranty?
Earlens offers a trial period during which the patient has the option to return the devices. The system includes a 3-year warranty with no charge for manufacturing-defect replacements or software upgrades, plus one-time loss/damage coverage.
